GEOGRAPHY
Klimovichi district lies to the east of Mogilev region and is 1,600
square km large. It occupies the Orsha-Mogilev plain. The surface is
mostly plains and hills and the district is situated at 160-200
metres above sea level. The highest point, a southern hill near a
town of Galichi, reaches 214 metres.
The list of minerals extracted includes peat, chalk, marl, silicate sands and clay. Average air temperature in January is (-7.8 C), in July - 18.5 C. Annual precipitation comes to 610 mm. A vegetation period lasts 185 days. Among those rivers that like wrinkles intersect the surface of Klimovichi district are the Sozh River with its tributaries Iput, Lobzhanka, Ostyor (with Sosnovka), Zhedunka (with Krupnya) and Surov. The Iput River has a man-made sea annexed to it. Cultivated soils in the district are sod-podzol set on fluvio-glacial foamy sands. Over-saturated soils amount to 50.8%, up to 20% of cultivated soils are waterlogged. As mentioned above, some 46.7% of cultivated soils is sod-podzol; waterlogged sod-podzol soils total 33.5%. Forest takes up 34% of the area, of which 30.5% are man-made forests consisting of pines, birches and asps. The district is rich in motley grass, legumes and grain. Boggy areas occupy 4% of the territory of the district, more than 345 hectares have been drained up. The major marshes are Bulgakovskoe, Famino, Savskoe and Bolshoi Mokh. Gireyevichi fur forest of Klimovichi forestry and Penkovka birch forest constitute the nature heritage of Klimovichi district. Total area of the cultivated lands runs to 82,800 hectares, of which 13,900 hectares drained. Key agricultural branches are meat and milk cattle breeding, pig-breeding and potato growing. Grains and fodder are also popular. |
